Costs vary based on soil conditions, system type, and site access — call (417) 719-0643 for a free site walk and itemized quote.
Advanced (aerobic) system installation begins late August 2026. Until then, we install conventional systems and handle all repair scopes on existing systems of any type.

What Conventional Septic Installation Includes
A standard residential install covers everything from the site walk through the final inspection and as-built filing.
A standard residential install covers:
- Site walk and quote

- County health department permit application and approval
- Excavation for tank and drainfield trenches
- Concrete tank purchase and installation (typically 1,000–1,500 gallon for residential)
- Inlet/outlet baffles and risers

- Distribution box and line connections
- Backfill, final grading, and seeding of disturbed areas
- County health department final inspection
- As-built drawing filed with the county
Free Site Walk & Itemized Quote
That range moves based on soil, rock, tank size, drainfield size, access, and whether the system needs pumping equipment instead of pure gravity flow.
Until late August 2026: conventional systems only. If your site requires advanced treatment before then, Calvin can coordinate with a registered installer while still handling the excavation portion of the work.
What's Driving Cost on Your Specific Site
Several factors move the final quote, and they usually show up clearly during the site walk and soil evaluation stage.
Soil and rock
Ozarks limestone bedrock close to the surface adds excavation cost. Drainfield depth is constrained by what’s underneath.
Drainfield size
Faster-percolating soil needs less drainfield area. Slow-percolating clay needs more — sometimes a lot more. A 3-bedroom home in good soil might need 1,500 sq ft of drainfield; the same home on poor soil might need 2,500+ sq ft.
Distance from house
The line from the house to the tank should be as short as practical. Long runs (75–100+ feet) add cost.
Equipment access
Open sites are faster to work. Tight gates, mature trees, or structures in the way slow everything down.
Tank type and size
1,000-gallon is standard for a 3-bedroom; 1,250–1,500 for larger homes. Concrete is the typical residential choice in SW Missouri.
Pump systems
If gravity won’t carry effluent to the drainfield, a pump is required. Adds equipment, electrical, and ongoing service considerations.
Permits and Soil Testing
Before any tank goes in the ground, the soil evaluation and county permit have to come first. We coordinate the testing and prepare the application.
Soil evaluation (perc test)
A certified soil evaluator visits the site, digs test pits, and determines what system can legally be installed. Some counties handle this in-house; others require a private evaluator.
Permit application
Submitted to the county health department with the soil report and proposed system design. Approval typically takes 2–4 weeks. Permit fees are paid to the county and passed through on your final invoice.
Both costs are separate from the installation quote and have to be done first. We coordinate the soil test and prepare the permit application.

Late summer through fall is the cleanest install window in SW Missouri. Spring (March–May) is the worst — saturated ground and rain delays.
Advanced (Aerobic) Systems — Coming Late August 2026
If your soil evaluation indicates conventional won’t work — shallow bedrock, slow percolation, high water table, small lot, or stream proximity — you’ll need an advanced treatment system. Advanced systems cost more than conventional and require ongoing service contracts.
Calvin Smith Excavating begins advanced/aerobic installation in late August 2026. Until then, if your site requires advanced and you can’t wait, we can refer you to a registered installer for the install while we handle any excavation portion of the work.

Septic Installation FAQ
Questions homeowners usually ask before starting a new conventional septic install in southwest Missouri.
What does a conventional septic installation include?
A typical install includes the site walk, soil evaluation coordination, permit application, excavation, tank installation, drainfield construction, line connections, final grading, inspection, and as-built filing.
What usually drives the install cost up or down?
The biggest variables are soil and rock, drainfield size, distance from the house, equipment access, tank size, and whether the layout needs a pump system.
Do I need a perc test and county permit first?
Yes. The soil evaluation and county permit come first. We coordinate the soil test and prepare the permit application as part of the process.
How long does a septic install take?
Active installation work usually takes 2-5 days, but the full process including soil testing and county approval typically runs about 5-10 weeks.
What size tank do most homes need?
Most 3-bedroom homes use a 1,000-gallon concrete tank, while larger homes often need a 1,250-1,500 gallon tank depending on the design.
What if my site needs an advanced or aerobic system?
If the soil report shows conventional will not work, you may need an advanced treatment system. Calvin Smith Excavating starts advanced aerobic installation in late August 2026.
Are you registered and insured for septic installs?
Calvin Smith Excavating is Missouri DHSS-registered for septic installation as #39658, carries USDOT #4119419, and can provide a general liability certificate on request.
